Between 1932 and 1933, millions of Ukrainians died of famine during the Holodomor. Whether the famine was a man-made one, intentionally planned by Joseph Stalin to repress the Ukrainian population is still debated amongst historians. The Soviet Union long denied the Holodomor, therefore it is not surprising when Gareth Jones, a Welsh journalist and political advisor, made note of the rising death toll in the Ukraine, he was written off. This didn't stop the journalist from digging deeper breaking the news to the Western media. Agnieszka Holland follows Jones' journey in this film and shines a light on a chapter of history that has often been pushed into a cobwebbed corner.
