In the presence of: Pietro Marcello

Pietro Marcello's 'Martin Eden' is not the first onscreen adaptation of Jack London's semi-autobiographical and bitter tale of a rough-and-tumble Bostonian sailor, who attempts to win the heart of a charming woman of the upper classes by diving head-first into literature. But it might be the most touching and most memorable one. The story is transported from Boston to Napels, the time-frame is ambiguous -switching back and forth between the 30s and 70s.The ideas laid bare by Luca Marinelli's portrayal of Martin Eden, however, are universal and timeless: the hypocrisy of class and class differences, the disillusionment of political ideologies and the question of what it means to be an individual.
