In the presence of: Rupert Goold
The end of American darling Judy Garland's life is miles away from the musical glamour and theatricality with which the child star danced and sung her way into people's hearts. On the 22nd of July 1969, the 47-year-old singer-actress (known mostly for her portrayal of Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz') was found dead in her rented home in London. Garland had overdosed on sedatives; a sad end to a turbulent life of insecurities and poisonous self-doubt. Garland was nearly broke, caught up in a bitter custody battle over her two children, and both physically and mentally drained. In the midst of all this drama, Judy was scheduled to fly to London for a five-week tour. This fatal year is zoomed in on in Rupert Goold's biopic 'Judy', in which Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland, steals the show.
