A blasphemous, anticlerical film about a novice who gets raped by her elderly Uncle. After her uncle commits suicide and leaves his home to her, Viridiana feels she needs to repent and invites beggars to stay at the house, where she can offer them sustenance and moral education. When Viridiana is out one day, the beggars start a rambunctious party and orgy, and ultimately attempt to rape Viridiana when she returns. At its premiere in 1961 in Cannes, the film was met with outrage and even banned by the Vatican and the Spanish government.
