When thirty-something, workless Billi hears that her grandmother, Nai Nai, is on her deathbed, she is hellbent on travelling to China to say goodbye to her. The rest of the family, however, is adamant to keep Billi away, as they don't want grandmother Nai Nai to know she is terminally ill with cancer. Director Lulu Wang has borrowed from her own memories for the plot of 'The Farewell'. As a Chinese American she has experienced the constant heartache of long-distance familial relationships, culture clashes and identity crises.
