In the grassy, frozen landscape of Inner Mongolia, an autonomous state in Northern China, the body of an old, unidentified woman is found. An inexperienced police officer is tasked to guard the body until back up makes it there. Soon, he is joined by a tough herdswoman, who takes over the protagonist-role from him. But these characters are mere flecks on the canvas of the true lead of the film: Inner Mongolia itself. Quan'an's film is truly a recognition and a celebration of the wide, icy landscape.
