Jayro's Bustamante's feature film is a semi-historical drama mixed with a splash of horror. La Llorona refers to an old Guatemalan urban legend of a woman who in a desperate wave of despair drowns her children in the river. Punished for her action, she is condemned to the fate of forever walking the line between heaven and earth, causing harm to everyone in her way. The legend is tied to the real repercussions of the gruesome Guatemalan civil war of the late 20th century that lead to the genocide of the country's Mayan population. Thirty years after the fact, ex-general Enrique Monteverde (Julio Diaz) is put on trial for his crimes. But after he collapses in the courtroom, he is allowed to vacate the premises without prosecution. As night falls on his mansion, the voices of protesters fizzle out, making way for a different, and altogether more frightening voice.
