We need to talk about Kevin. Fien Troch's fourth feature zooms in on Kevin, 17, who's just been released for violent behaviour and moves in with his aunt. What should be a fresh start turns into a malaise between mothers and modern-day minors. The youngsters are played by newcomers. Screen International praised the "excellent ensemble cast" and called Sebastian Van Dun's Kevin a stand-out performance that invites comparisons with James Dean or the young Sean Penn. Troch's partner and editor Nico Leunen co-wrote the script. The remarkable score is written by Johnny Jewel from synthpop band Chromatics and his instrumental duo Symmetry, who also scored Ryan Gosling's 'Lost River'. The Hollywood Reporter referred to Gus Van Sant ('Elephant', 'Paranoid Park') and Larry Clark ('Ken Park', 'Kids'). (R.D.)
