This film presents the true story of Kinoshita's experiences during World War II, when he was a young director in his prime who ran afoul of the military authorities for his film 'The Army' (1944) and consequently distanced himself from Shochiku and making movies. At the same time, it is also a tale of loving devotion between a mother and son whose lives are torn apart by war.
