Film Fest Gent - Dag van het diverse (?) filmberoep
Archived: Dag van het diverse (?) filmberoep

duration: 480 minutes

Film Fest Gent focuses on 16 October 2020 on the hard truths surrounding gender and cultural diversity in the film sector. Together with WIFTM Belgium (Women in Film, Television & Media Belgium), Wanda Collective, Represent and the Directors Guild of Flanders, we focus on gender and cultural diversity in the film and media landscape.

Today, male directors and producers still dominate the film industry. We also notice a striking absence of cultural diversity in the audiovisual sector, both in front of and behind the camera. At this edition of the Day of the Film Profession, we identify and discuss these flaws in the current film and media landscape and we join forces in search of concrete solutions.

The brand new non-profit organization WIFTM Belgium brings its president to the stage, who addresses WIFTM's goals and initiatives. Sofie Van Bauwel, professor at Ghent University, examines the absence of women at important film awards and their limited presence in influential positions in the sector. In the aftermath of #Metoo, Belgian film and media professionals also asked themselves more and more questions about the gender imbalance in the audiovisual sector. Sofie Van Bauwel delves into the question of whether makers help determine the image.

Wanda Collective will be conducting a panel discussion with a number of local and foreign directors about their current position in the sector and in which ways it deserves improvement.

This is followed by a panel discussion by Represent on the issues surrounding cultural diversity in the audiovisual sector.

We will conclude the day by jointly offering concrete solutions to strive for equality in the film, television and media landscape, both in terms of gender and cultural background.
