French-Senegalese director Mati Diop has presented us with a rare insight into the lives and hearts of the overlooked victims of the refugee crisis: those that are left behind. In a futuristic version of a Dakari suburb, a group of men debate leaving their home for Spain, where they hope to gain better income. 17-year-old, heartbroken Ada is convinced her boyfriend joined the men on their journey, and falls into a pit of melancholia and hurt. The film takes a turn for the supernatural, when ghostly apparitions of the men they knew start haunting the town.
