Where students and professionals meet
Joe Kraemer, David Shire & Walter Murch, and Terence Blanchard teach participants about film music and/or sound design. Moderated & curated by dr. Martine Huvenne & Peter Vermeersch.
As an annual tradition, Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards coordinate the Film Music Seminar, an event organised for students in film, (film) music and sound design to learn and discuss about a variety of topics on everything concerning film music. During the day, different speakers, often nominees, winners or special guests at the World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert, talk about their experiences and thoughts on scoring for motion pictures and how they get to work. The focus is always on the relation and collaboration between composer and director. After the Seminar, a matchmaking takes place between students of the 3rd bachelor and master in film, (film) music and sound design.
This year's Film Music Seminar will take place on Tuesday 17 October 2017 from 09:00 to 16:00 at Vooruit Ghent with a focus on the different roles of jazz music in films. Is it the music genre of a specific ethnic group? Is it an essential aspect of crime films or musicals? What is its potential in such films as ‘Birdman’? Is an orchestrated jazz theme still considered jazz? Or does jazz require a different form of cinema that centres around improvisation? Dr. Martine Huvenne and Peter Vermeersch moderate a debate with David Shire, Walter Murch, Joe Kraemer and Terence Blanchard.
