We are very pleased to announce that EPAS as a one-year postgraduate in the creative potential of sound started the first of September 2016. This international program is organized by The School of Arts (Gent), NFA (Amsterdam) and ifs (Cologne).
EPAS (European Postgraduate in Arts in Sound) is a one-year international postgraduate programme about sound in an audiovisual context and is organised into five intensive modules during the first semester, each exploring sound as an artistic discipline from a different perspective. Four modules take place in Ghent, one in Amsterdam. During the second semester, students have the possibility to develop their personal artistic projects at one of the partner institutes.
Sound is at the heart of our perception of the world. While there are countless courses teaching how to interpret visual information, sound is a relatively unexplored field of study. Although academic studies do explore the theoretical and conceptual sides of audio production, sound is generally considered a technical rather than an aesthetic subject.
EPAS aims to address this imbalance through an integration of practice and theory continuously fed by critical and conceptual thinking. It will teach sound as a discipline in itself, as well as in relation to screen production, performance and other arts and media.
EPAS is a postgraduate with an international certificate as outcome. The partners of EPAS Consortium are KASK, School of Arts Gent, HoGent, Belgium; NFA (Nederlandse Film Academie), The Netherlands; and ifs (internationale filmschule köln), Germany. ENSATT, France; Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing); and Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, UK; as well as The School of Sound, UK; Festival International du Film d’Aubagne, France and Film Fest Gent, Belgium are associated partners of the EPAS consortium. The consortium can invite other associated partners in order to optimize the education.
EPAS will start 1 September 2018 and will be organised in five intensive modules in the first semester. Each module explores sound as an artistic discipline from a different perspective. Four of them (on listening; sound and space; audiovisual composition and on a personal project preparing the final project) will take place in Ghent, and one (transmitting an experience through sound) in Amsterdam.
On 31 October, the results of the workshop ‘Sound and Space’ with Els Viaene will be presented during a Student Showcase.
