Film Fest Gent - Black Mass

Whitey Bulger used to be an Irish mafia boss who worked for the FBI as an informant for thirty years. During the Seventies he grew up in Boston as the black sheep of an Irish-American family. He isn't simply a villain, but also a shrewd and cunning strategist who forged an alliance with his FBI friend (Joel Edgerton) and brother (Benedict Cumberbatch) against the Italian Mafia. Over time, the Machiavelli-quoting psychopath became the most powerful and notorious criminal in the history of Boston. Director Scott Cooper succeeded in adapting Gerard O'Neill and Dick Lehr's novel about this criminal genius into an exciting and suspenseful film. Johnny Depp is almost unrecognisable, due to his balding pate and creepy smile. Bearing in mind his previous incursions into crime ('Donnie Brasco', 'Public Enemies'), Cooper was able to rely on a leading man with the charisma and the reputation to turn Bulger into an unforgettable character.
