13th World Soundtrack Awards & Concert Alexandre Desplat

The Ghent Film Festival is delighted to welcome the French composer Alexandre Desplat to the traditional film music concert during the second part of the World Soundtrack Academy award ceremony which will bring the 40th film festival to a festive end.

We have had the pleasure of his company at several previous WSA concerts but this will be the first time that Desplat, the most celebrated composer of his generation, will perform a selection of his incredibly rich and varied film compositions at ‘t Kuipke Ghent in front of an audience of 3,000 people and film music fans. Alexandre Desplat continues to amaze with the sheer volume of compositions he produces, yet without compromising quality and imagination in the slightest. Last year, he wrote remarkable music for no fewer than eight (!) feature films: the Oscar winning Argo by Ben Affleck, Zero Dark Thirty by Kathryn Bigelow, Rise of the Guardians by Peter Ramsey, Renoir by Gilles Bourdos, Reality by Matteo Garrone, De Rouille et d’Os by Jacques Audiard, Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson and Cloclo by Florent-Emilio Siri. This year’s Cannes Film Festival programme features two more films for which Desplat has written scores: Venus in Fur by Roman Polanski and Zulu by Jérôme Salle.

Since his debut in the late eighties, Desplat already has 143 scores to his name and his international career includes collaborations with such leading directors as Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), Roman Polanski (The Ghost Writer, Carnage), George Clooney (The Ides of March), David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Stephen Frears (The Queen) and Jonathan Glazer (Birth).

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented during the award ceremony of the WSA concert goes to the Italian composer Riz Ortolani, born in 1931 in Pesaro, Italy. Together with Ennio Morricone and the late Carlo Rustichelli and Nino Rota, Ortolani is one of the greats of Italian film music from the golden era of Italian cinema.

The World Soundtrack Academy announces Composition contest finalists (13/09/2012)

Three finalists wil have the chance to win the highly sought after SABAM Award For Best Young European Composer. This award was created by the World Soundtrack Academy to promote and stimulate young and talented composers. The finalists are Peter David Bateman (UK), Michail Palaiologou (Greece) and Valentin Hadjadj (France). Their compositions will be performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic under the baton of Dirk Brossé during the presentation of the World Soundtrack Awards on 20 October at the venue ’t Kuipe in Ghent. This is the official closing ceremony of the 39th Ghent Film Festival (9-20 October Ghent).

The candidates were asked to compose music for the final scene of ‘The Big Combo’, a classic in the film-noir genre, directed by Joseph H. Lewis in 1955. The scene perfectly summarizes the spirit of a crime film made in the 40s and 50s.

The professional jury, composed of Dirk Brossé (Conductor and Music Director Film Festival Ghent), Johan Verminnen (Managing Director SABAM), Patrick Duynslaegher (Artistic Director Film Festival Ghent), Michaël R. Roskam (Director), Stefan Rycken (ACE Image Factory) and Michel Herr (Composer),
was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the compositions. Therefore, it should not be a suprise that the final decision was preceded by elaborate deliberations. Eventually, Peter David Bateman, Michail Palaiologou and Valentin Hadjadj were chosen.

For the first time in the existence of the Composition contest, there are three finalists. They will be invited for a fantastic three-day visit in Ghent where they will have the opportunity to meet important people of the film music industry. Moreover, their compositions will be executed live during the World Soundtrack Awards.

Dirk Brossé celebrates 75 years of classic film scores (15/08/2012)

Dirk Brossé, currently Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra Of Philadelphia, will make his début with the European Union Youth Orchestra this summer with a celebration of scores from more than 75 years of cinema history. In a special tribute to John Williams, who turned 80 this year, the Orchestra will perform five of his scores - including the instantly recognisable Main Title from 'Star Wars' – alongside music from other legendary film music composers, such as Bernard Herrmann, John Barry and Erich Korngold, as well as composers such as R Strauss and Luigi Boccherini, whose music appears in 2001: 'A Space Odyssey' and 'Master and Commander'.

Belgian conductor Brossé first came into contact with the Orchestra – or rather, its predecessor, the European Community Youth Orchestra – in 1979, when he auditioned for, and was offered, a place as a trumpeter.

‘At that time, I had other commitments that prevented me from taking up my place’ says Brossé, ‘so it’s a particular thrill to now be able to take the helm of this extraordinary orchestra in a challenging programme with well known film scores written by great composers. I am extremely happy to be invited to conduct some of Europe’s best young musicians. I am looking forward to sharing unique moments of beauty and happiness with both the orchestra and the audience.’

The concerts mark the first half of the Orchestra’s 2012 summer tour, which will see the Orchestra perform in Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and the UK (see attached full tour schedule). The EUYO will perform with Brossé in the following festivals:

Bolzano Festival Bozen
Wednesday 8th August, 20.30: Nuovo Teatro Comunale, Bolzano,/Bozen, Italy

13th Young Euro Classic Festival
Friday 10th August, 20.00: Konzerthaus, Berlin, Germany

Grafenegg Music Summer
Saturday 11th August, 20:00: Wolkenturn, Schloss Grafenegg, Haitzendorf, Austria

Kultursommer Nordhessen
Monday 13th August, 20:00: Kongress Palais Kassel-Stadthalle, Germany

A multi-faceted composer and a respected conductor on the international scene, Brossé is Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and Professor of Conducting and Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Music in Ghent. He is also the Music Director of the Filmfestival Ghent and Music Director and Principal Conductor of the ‘Star Wars in Concert World Tour’.

The EUYO has recently returned from a critically-acclaimed tour to the United States of America, where it was dubbed in a review by the New York Times as ‘among the elite institutions of its kind.’ The EUYO unites Europe’s most talented young musicians, aged 14 to 24, who are drawn from all 27 member states of the European Union. It was founded in 1976 by Joy and Lionel Bryer, with Maestro Claudio Abbado as its first Music Director, as a way to represent the European ideal of a community working together to achieve peace and social and cultural understanding.

‘This is the first time in our history that we are embracing a film music programme,’ says Joy Bryer, who regularly accompanies the orchestra on tour, ‘and aside from the music being absolutely terrific in its own right, it’s a great way to encourage a younger audience to go to concerts. I view that as a key role for the EUYO – to show the younger generation that classical music can be just as exhilarating as anything else on their ipod.’

European Master in Sound (EMAS), a European Joint Masters Degree in Sound (05/07/2012)

Ghent International Film Festival joins European consortium to form European Master in Sound (EMAS), a European Joint Masters Degree in Sound

Beginning in October 2014, European Master in Sound (EMAS) will become the first European Joint Masters degree for Sound created by a consortium of European universities, film schools, art schools and arts organisations. The overall aim of the course is to produce practitioners to work in the creative industries, who are not only highly skilled but also individual, creative, critically aware, innovative and professional in their approach. By producing graduates with this combination of attributes, EMAS will fulfil its objective to enable people who have something ‘to say’, to communicate this effectively with their audience.

What is EMAS?
EMAS is a two-year MA in Sound, an intensive education in the creative potential of sound both of itself and as part of a multi media practice. The innovative curriculum emphasises the development of creative practice alongside technical craft and embraces research as essential in supporting self and creative development.

At this moment a steering group (with members from Aalto University, Finland; Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie, Netherlands; ENSATT, France; Festival International du Film d'Aubagne, France; Flanders International Film Festival, Belgium; ifs internationale filmschule köln, Germany; School of Arts Ghent, Belgium; and The School of Sound, UK) is currently developing the curriculum with the support of the European Commission.

More information will be available in January 2013.

Why is it needed?
Sound is at the heart of our perception of the world. It defines and clarifies our experience in time and space. It is both informative and affectual – sound can give us information but, more importantly, sound makes us feel, physically and emotionally.

While there are countless courses teaching how to interpret visual information, from medieval painting to modern advertising, sound is a relatively unexplored field of study. And, although academic studies do explore the theoretical and conceptual sides of audio production, sound is generally considered a technical, rather than aesthetic, subject. EMAS aims to address this imbalance through an integration of practice and theory continuously fed by theoretical, critical and conceptual thinking. In this way, it will teach sound as a discipline in itself as well as in relation to screen production, dance, theatre, radio, architecture and other arts and media.

We strongly believe that this can be achieved most effectively as a joint degree, taking full advantage of the diversity of research and working practices across Europe and assimilating them into one educational program. This collaboration between European schools, creative industries and professional practitioners and artists will address the need for new skills – both technical and creative - demanded by rapid technological, economic and social developments. By combining research and education in this unique curriculum we will enable graduates to flourish within this creative and technological evolution.

Additionally, the EMAS curriculum encourages mobility within Europe by requiring the students to study at one of the partner schools or with an associated artist or practitioner. This form of international education stimulates new creative thinking while encouraging more job opportunities for graduates on the European labour market. Likewise, the teachers benefit through interaction with a much more diverse group of students as well as with a broader circle of educators than they would normally experience.

Who is EMAS for?
Our target group is artists, creators and professional practitioners who want to develop their knowledge and skills in sound. We will welcome applications from anyone already using sound or interested in exploring the field of sound to incorporate it into their artistic practice.

Students will be selected first and foremost on their creative abilities, coupled with a passion for their chosen medium. Technical abilities are important, but providing there is a good level of basic competence these skills can be taught. Recent graduates, experienced professionals or those without a formal academic background will all be welcome as we look for a diverse group of students who can learn together and inspire one another.

The strength of EMAS is that students can access the expertise of different institutes and exchange ideas on a European level. Students will have the possibility to develop their own projects within a multicultural environment, providing them with fundamental insights into the diversity of European thinking. Even though the course will be taught in English, the variety of European philosophic and artistic traditions is at the heart of this MA.

When does it begin?
The EMAS partners are now developing the curriculum with the aim of accepting applications from late-2013 and classes beginning in October 2014.

From September 2012 we will have our website online to disseminate information about EMAS and our progress with the curriculum.
